BIO:
Kiran Chandra is currently living in Shanghai, China. Working in various media- drawing, painting, text and video, her practice through language and meaning girds the basis of her work. Her conceptual vocabulary is informed by her BA in Literature from New Delhi, India and her MFA from New York City, USA. Born and raised in Kolkata, India, schooled in the United States, and attending residencies in Italy and Mexico have informed a sensitivity to location, dislocation, praxis, temporality, power and place. In resistance to binaries of ‘here’ and ‘there,’ her work seeks another proposal T(here)- philosophically as well as aesthetically.
Kiran has exhibited in solo and group shows in the United States and abroad, including The Bronx Museum of Art, Wave Hill, Momenta Art and Bogart Salon, Brooklyn, NY; Project 88, Mumbai, India; Shrine Empire Gallery, New Delhi, India; and Ganges Art Gallery, Kolkata, India. She has been awarded an Apexart Fellowship, a Cisneros Scholarship, a BRIC Media Arts Fellowship and a Women’s Edge Award, among other prizes. Residencies include SOMA Summer International Program, Mexico City, Mexico; Studio Arts Center, Florence, Italy; and The Cooper Union Summer Art Intensive, New York, NY. She started Temporary Agency, an artist-run collective space in NYC. All the paintings offered here are titled after the stories by the Palestinian novelist, journalist, teacher and activist Ghassan Kanafani (1936- 1972).
