BIO:

Ana Gonçalves was born in 1976 in Oeiras. She studied Painting and completed a postgraduate degree in Curatorship at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon. Ana has worked as an art mediator for the modern collection of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and is currently collaborating with the Caixa Geral de Depósitos Foundation – Culturgest and the Atelier Museu Júlio Pomar. She also served as an assistant teacher at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon, where she lectured Image Theory, and has been teaching Art History at NextArt in Lisbon since 2011.

In her artistic practice, Ana works primarily in drawing, painting and mixed media. She has attended several residencies and workshops, both in Portugal and abroad. Since 2007, she has belonged to the community of artists that meets regularly to learn from the Florence-based artist-teacher duo, Rose Shakinovsky and Claire Gavronsky.

This series of artworks stems from Ana’s personal observations of a dog that spends long periods alone in a courtyard visible from her window. Witnessing the animal's anxious behaviors and overwhelming excitement upon the owner's arrival has resonated deeply with her. These solitary dogs depicted serve as poignant reminders of the countless animals left behind during catastrophic events and periods of upheaval. Their wistful poses capture a universal vulnerability.

The title "His Master's Voice" references an iconic image of a dog attentively listening to a gramophone. The curiosity and stillness of the animal intrigued her as a counterpoint to the emotionally-charged scenarios she was exploring. The word "master" conveys very different meanings in different languages, from the "maestro" of an orchestra to the oppressor in a conflict. In the context of this series it is meant to refer to the "owner.” These pieces ultimately reflect on the profound bond between dogs and their human companions, prompting contemplation of the responsibilities of stewardship over beloved animal families.
