These drawings stem from my interest in the relationship between humans and animals within the context of contemporary issues such as species extinction and the human condition today.

Through drawing, I explore how abstraction and figuration can be combined to create images that propose or question aspects of the world, rather than making statements.

Here, I sought to convey an atmosphere of 'uneasy tranquility', reflecting the provisional and vulnerable nature of all things and the passage of time.

The word 'passing' has several meanings, the most common of which is death. However, it can also refer to the end of something, such as the passing of the seasons, or a passing mention in a sentence or statement. Therefore, 'passing', in any of its meanings, points to an idea of movement and transience, and the non-fixed and non-fixable nature of reality.

BIO

Ana Gonçalves was born in Oeiras, Portugal, in 1976.

In 2001, she completed a degree in Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Lisbon, followed by a postgraduate degree in Curatorial Studies. She was later invited to teach Visual Form Theory at the same institution for several years, a position from which she resigned in early 2019.

During this period, she also collaborated with several renowned institutions and museums, including the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and Culturgest, where she has led guided tours since 2006.

Her interdisciplinary artistic practice is characterised by a preference for traditional themes such as the human and non-human figure, portraiture, landscape, and still life, in the context of contemporary issues such as climate change and other natural and human-made disasters.
