Land-Scape #2 - Caroline Maxwell

$250.00

DESCRIPTION

Multigrade RC Print and Oil Paint
10 in x 8 in
2023

These photographic works are created through a unique and complex process. They originate with a digital i-phone panorama photograph, with all of its visual glitches and distortions. This image is printed out on paper, transferred by hand to a plastic adhesive transparency, and then chemically printed in the darkroom onto black-and-white photographic paper. These works are part of a larger series of digital-to-analogue photographs, whose original images were taken by the artist throughout western Romania, a region where the traditional analogue world collides with, sometimes resists, and exists in spite of, the modern digital world.

BIO

Caroline Maxwell was born in Los Angeles, USA. She received a B.A. and M.A. in Art History from California State University Northridge, and an M.F.A. in Studio Art from Claremont Graduate University. As an artist, Caroline Maxwell works with many mediums, from painting, to photographic processes, and many experimental materials in-between. She prefers thinking through one’s hands, senses, and materials, leaving behind the primacy of language in our encounters with the world and in how we access knowledge. In addition to her practice as an artist, Caroline Maxwell has been a professor of art history, art and photography. She has taught everything from prehistoric art history to contemporary theory, and she finds that both her teaching and her background in art history are an inseparable part of her own art making.
