The works in this sale stem from my ongoing visual research into the patterns and rhythms of crowds. As part of a broader interdisciplinary practice, the series explores how people move through their environments—guided by body, mind, and unconscious processes.

Rendered in black and white, the images reduce figures to silhouettes, inviting viewers to look past individuality and consider the shared spaces we inhabit. The absence of detail highlights the gray zones of daily life—those in-between spaces where perception, connection, and movement overlap.

At once a study of form and a meditation on human experience, the series reflects on the tension between independence and interdependence, asking how we navigate the world as singular beings yet remain tied to a collective.

BIO

Catherine Haley Epstein is an artist, writer, and psychotherapist whose work bridges scent, psyche, and creative practice. For over 20 years she has examined the role of the unconscious in art-making, with her practice often described as “Neo-Dada,” “provocative,” and “disruptive.” Her book Nose Dive introduces artists and makers on how to use scent in their creative practice. In 2023, Catherine received an artist fellowship at the Lunder Institute, where she launched The Red Table Project: Object Relations at the Colby Museum of Art. This project applied psychoanalytic frameworks to the museum’s collection and developed new tools for the caretakers of its artworks.
