The paintings in this series seek to illuminate the transition between night and day along a single spot overlooking Lake Michigan. Here, at the 45th parallel, halfway between the equator and the North Pole, the road ends into a jetty of rocks and sand at the water’s edge, and everything begins. Standing at this northward facing point overlooking the horizon, the sun rises to the right and sets to the left in its endless daily cycle. Witnessing these moments, time disappears, the past becomes present and a way forward feels possible. The viewer is invited to invert these landscapes, so that the sky and water reflect spaciousness in all directions.

BIO

Dana Suzanne Dirker is an interdisciplinary artist whose work in drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media and sculpture explores the landscape as a living entity. Informed by eco-feminism, she finds reciprocity between our bodies and the environment and speaks to the interrelationship of trauma and recovery in ourselves and in the natural world.

Dana teaches arts integration and creativity workshops to teachers and caregivers and offers early childhood art classes in the Reggio Emilia tradition. Her artwork is deeply informed by the holistic perspectives of children and intergenerational communities of care. Dana earned a B.A. in Fine Art with a dual focus on drawing and printmaking from Binghamton University, and an M.A. in Art and Art Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.
