Maps from 1960s school manuals serve as the ground for paintings depicting gesturing hands. These gestures, derived from paintings and drawings within the European art tradition, pose different questions as they overlay geographies marked by a complex history of their origins. The predominant use of red carries multiple connotations, encompassing courage and power, as well as danger and anger. Different cultural perspectives provide readings and interpretations that are mutually contradictory.

BIO

Paulo Borges (1969, Eaton, UK) is a multidisciplinary artist and educator living in Portugal. His practice is rooted in a way of thinking that brings together disparate elements in playful and interruptive ways. He reflects on the need for nuance when looking at the complexity of our cultural and personal structures. Paulo has been active in independent educational projects for 15 years, offering workshops and training for artists, art educators, teenagers and people from different ages and backgrounds. He teaches year-long drawing and painting courses. Paulo received his degree in Communication Design from FBA-UL (Lisbon) and worked as a lead designer in major companies before dedicating himself fully to art. He continues to combine his professional background with his artistic vision, working reflectively and exploratorily.
